Each digit has a place: hundreds, tens, and ones.

A 0 can hold a place with nothing in it.

Read it: Hundreds, tens and ones

640 in a chart: 6 chips of 100, 4 chips of 10 and 0 chips of 1. So 640 is 6 hundreds, 4 tens and 0 ones.

  1. Put each place in its own column: hundreds, tens, ones.
  2. Count the chips in each column: 6, 4 and 0.
  3. Write the digits in that order: 640.

A chip of 100 is worth 10 chips of 10, and a chip of 10 is worth 10 chips of 1.

Each digit tells how many chips are in its place.

A 0 holds an empty place: 640 has no ones, and 305 has no tens.

Each digit tells how many hundreds, tens or ones. 10 of a place make 1 of the next.

Reading 640 as 64, because the ones place is empty.

The 0 holds the ones place: 6 hundreds, 4 tens and 0 ones is 640.

507 = ___ hundreds, 0 tens, 7 ones — 5. 507 has 5 chips of 100 in the hundreds place: 5.

354 = 300 + 50 + 4

Every digit in a number has a job. Let's break the number three hundred fifty-four into hundreds, tens, and ones.

Here's our number — three hundred fifty-four. Three digits, each in its own special spot.

Look at the first digit, three. It sits in the hundreds place — the spot farthest from the right.

Three in the hundreds place means three hundreds, which is three hundred.

Next is the five, sitting in the tens place.

Five tens make fifty.

Last is the four, in the ones place — the smallest spot.

Four ones is just four.

Put it all together: three hundred plus fifty plus four.

So three hundred fifty-four is three hundreds, five tens, and four ones. That's place value!
