Today we'll learn place value. Every digit in a number has a special job based on where it sits.

Let's look at the number three hundred forty-seven.

The digit on the right is in the ones place. That's the seven.

Seven in the ones place just means seven.

The next digit to the left is in the tens place. That's the four.

Four in the tens place means four tens — that's forty.

The digit on the far left is in the hundreds place. That's the three.

Three in the hundreds place means three hundreds — that's three hundred.

We can stretch the number out: three hundred plus forty plus seven.
