120 + 230 = .

How it is taught

You add hundreds with hundreds, tens with tens.

Like units combine.

A full ten of one unit becomes one of the next.

Read it: Add place by place

268 + 142: the ones make 10, so trade 10 ones for a ten. The tens make 11, so trade 10 tens for a hundred. 268 + 142 = 410.

  1. Line up hundreds, tens and ones.
  2. Add the ones first. 10 ones make a ten: trade them up.
  3. Add the tens, then the hundreds, and trade again when you can.

A place holds 9 at most, so 10 of a place become 1 of the next.

Starting with the ones shows every trade before you need it.

The total stays the same however the blocks are grouped.

Add place by place from the ones. 10 of a place trade for 1 of the next.

Writing 11 tens in the tens place.

11 tens is 1 hundred and 1 ten: trade 10 of them up.

135 + 15 = ___ — 150. Add the ones: 5 + 5 = 10. Trade 10 of them for a rod, then add the tens and the hundreds.

247 + 185

Let's add two hundred forty-seven plus one hundred eighty-five. We'll break each number apart by place value.

Two hundred forty-seven is two hundreds, four tens, and seven ones.

One hundred eighty-five is one hundred, eight tens, and five ones.

Let's add the ones first. Seven plus five.

Seven plus five is twelve. That's one ten and two ones.

Now the tens. Forty plus eighty, plus the extra ten we made.

Forty plus eighty is one hundred twenty. Plus ten more is one hundred thirty.

Now the hundreds. Two hundred plus one hundred, plus the extra hundred from the tens.

Two hundred plus one hundred is three hundred. Plus another hundred is four hundred.

Put it all together: four hundred, plus thirty, plus two.

Two hundred forty-seven plus one hundred eighty-five is four hundred thirty-two. Great work!
