How it is taught

0:00 of 4:34

Subtract hundreds, tens, and ones in their places.

Regroup if a place is too small to take from.

Read it: Break a ten to subtract

230 − 91: 1 one must go and there are 0 ones. Break a hundred into 10 tens, then a ten into 10 ones. What is left is 139.

  1. Start with the ones: 0 − 1 cannot be done, so break a ten into 10 ones.
  2. There are no tens to break, so first break a hundred into 10 tens.
  3. Take away by place: 10 − 1 = 9 ones, 12 − 9 = 3 tens, 1 hundred. 230 − 91 = 139.

A ten is 10 ones, and a hundred is 10 tens.

Breaking one changes how the number is grouped, not how much it is.

Then each place has enough to take away.

Take away by place. If a place has too few, break 1 from the next place.

Taking 0 from 1 and writing 1 in the ones.

The 91 is taken from the 230: break a ten, then 10 − 1 = 9 ones.

154 − 16 = ___ — 138. 6 ones must go, and there are only 4 ones loose. Break 1 rod into 10 ones. The same number, grouped differently: 4 rods and 14 ones. Take 16 away: 154 − 16 = 138.

524 − 268

Today we'll subtract big numbers. Imagine you have 524 marbles and you give 268 away — how many are left?

Stack them up, lining up the ones, tens, and hundreds.

Start at the ones. We need to take 8 away from 4 — but 4 isn't big enough.

No problem! We borrow one ten. The 2 tens becomes 1 ten, and the 4 ones grows into 14 ones.

Now 14 minus 8 is 6. Write 6 in the ones.

Move to the tens. We need 6 tens, but we only have 1.

Borrow again! The 5 hundreds becomes 4 hundreds, and the 1 ten grows into 11 tens.

Now 11 minus 6 is 5. Write 5 in the tens.

Last, the hundreds: 4 minus 2 is 2. Write 2 in the hundreds.

524 minus 268 is 256. Place value lets us borrow whenever we need!
