Break numbers into tens and ones, then add.

Regroup ones if they make ten or more.

Read it: Trade ones for a ten

You have 17 cubes. Fifteen more arrive. Counting every cube from one is slow — look at the loose ones, and the ring of ten.

  1. Add the ones: 7 and 5 make 12.
  2. Trade ten ones for a new ten. Two stay.
  3. Add the three tens and the 2 ones: 32.

Counting all 17 plus 15 from one works, but it is slow and easy to lose track.

Ones can make more than 9, so you trade ten of them for a ten you can carry.

After the trade, 12 ones become 1 ten and 2 ones, so the tens are ready to add.

Add the ones, trade ten of them for a ten, then add the tens.

Writing 12 in the ones place and forgetting to trade ten for a ten.

12 ones are a ten and 2 ones. Trade the ten, then add it with the other tens.

27 + 14 = ___ — 41. Add the ones: 7 + 4 = 11. Trade 10 of them for a ten, then add the tens.

38 + 25

Sara has thirty-eight stickers. She gets twenty-five more. How many stickers does she have now?

Let's stack thirty-eight and twenty-five so the tens line up with tens and the ones line up with ones.

Each number is made of tens and ones. Thirty-eight is thirty plus eight. Twenty-five is twenty plus five.

Let's start with the ones column. Eight plus five?

Thirteen! Eight and five make a ten and three more, so we write thirteen below the line.

Now the tens column. Thirty plus twenty?

Fifty! Three tens and two tens make five tens. We write fifty below the thirteen.

Now we add our two partial sums together — thirteen plus fifty.

Thirteen plus fifty is sixty-three.

So thirty-eight plus twenty-five is sixty-three. Sara has sixty-three stickers!

38 stickers + 25 more — how many?We'll add the tens and ones separately.38+25= 30 + 8= 20 + 513← 8 + 550← 30 + 2063ANSWER63stickers
