Subtract within 100 without Regrouping

Students subtract within 100 when each digit in the top number is at least as large as the corresponding digit in the bottom number, so no regrouping is needed (e.g., 78 − 35 = 43).

12 rungs. A star at the top.

− 11 = 14

How it is taught

Each place is subtracted in its own column.

When the ones are big enough, no trade is needed.

Read it: Tens with tens, ones with ones

61 + 21: 61 is 6 tens and 1 one, and 21 is 2 tens and 1 one. Put tens with tens and ones with ones: 8 tens and 2 ones, 82. And 61 − 21 the same way: 4 tens and 0 ones, 40.

  1. Show each number as tens and ones: 61 is 6 tens and 1 one.
  2. Add the ones: 1 and 1 make 2.
  3. Add the tens: 6 tens and 2 tens make 8 tens. 8 tens and 2 ones is 82.

A ten and a one are not the same size, so tens go with tens and ones with ones.

The ones make 2, fewer than 10, so nothing trades.

Taking away works the same way: ones from ones, tens from tens.

Ones with ones, tens with tens, adding or taking away.

Adding the 6 tens to the 1 one, as if they were the same size.

Line them up by place: tens with tens, ones with ones. 61 + 21 = 82.

60 − 20 = ___ — 40. Ones with ones: 0 − 0 = 0, so nothing has to be broken. Then the tens.

78 − 35

Imagine you have seventy-eight stickers and you give thirty-five away. How many do you have left?

Let's stack the numbers. Put seventy-eight on top and thirty-five right below it, with a minus sign.

Now draw a line under them. We'll subtract one column at a time, starting on the right.

Look at the ones column. What is eight minus five?

Three! Write three under the ones column.

Now the tens column. What is seven minus three?

Grade 2 · Subtract column by column — no regrouping needed

Four. Write four under the tens column.

Notice we never had to borrow — each top digit was already big enough.

Seventy-eight minus thirty-five is forty-three. You have forty-three stickers left. Great job!
