Subtract within 100 with Regrouping

Students subtract within 100 when the ones digit of the top number is less than the ones digit of the bottom number, requiring regrouping a ten into ten ones (e.g., 62 − 47 = 15).

12 rungs. A star at the top.

30 − = 8

Regroup when ones on top are too small.

Trade 1 ten for 11 ones.

Then subtract ones, then tens.

Read it: Break a ten when the ones run short

85 − 59: there are 5 ones, and 9 must go. Break a ten into 10 ones: now 7 tens and 15 ones, and 9 can go. 85 − 59 = 26.

  1. Look at the ones: 5 ones, and 9 must go.
  2. Break 1 ten into 10 ones: 7 tens and 15 ones.
  3. Take away by place: 15 − 9 = 6 ones, 7 − 5 = 2 tens. 26.

A ten is the same as 10 ones, so breaking it does not change how many there are.

Now there are enough ones to take 9.

Check by adding back: 26 + 59 = 85.

When the ones run short, break a ten into 10 ones.

Taking 5 from 9 instead, because 9 − 5 is easy, and writing 34.

9 ones must go, and there are only 5. Break a ten first: 15 − 9 = 6. 85 − 59 = 26.

44 − 15 = ___ — 29. 5 ones must go, and there are only 4 ones loose. Break 1 rod into 10 ones. The same number, grouped differently: 3 rods and 14 ones. Take 15 away: 44 − 15 = 29.

62 − 47

Let's subtract sixty-two minus forty-seven. The ones place is going to need a little help today!

Stack them up — sixty-two on top, forty-seven on the bottom, and draw the subtract line.

Start in the ones place. Can we subtract seven from two? No — two is too small.

So we regroup. Take one ten from the six tens. Six tens becomes five tens.

That ten slides over to the ones. Now we have twelve ones instead of two.

Twelve minus seven is five. Write five in the ones place.

Now the tens. Five minus four is one. Write one in the tens place.

Grade 2 · When the ones place needs help, regroup a ten

Sixty-two minus forty-seven is fifteen. Regrouping made it work!
