Add all the tens, then all the ones.

Regroup if the ones make ten or more.

Read it: Add 3 numbers: make a ten first

31 + 29 + 19: the ones of 31 and 29 make 10, so add that pair first: 60. Then 60 + 19 = 79.

  1. Look at the ones: 1, 9 and 9.
  2. Find the pair whose ones make 10: 31 + 29 = 60.
  3. Add the last number: 60 + 19 = 79.

You can add in any order or grouping, and the total stays the same.

A pair whose ones make 10 leaves a number with 0 ones, and that is easy to add to.

All the ones together make 19: 1 ten and 9 ones, so the total is 79.

Group the numbers whose ones make 10, then add the rest by place.

Adding the ones, getting 19, and writing 19 in the ones place.

19 ones is 1 ten and 9 ones: the ten joins the tens. The total is 79.

37 + 33 + 25 = ___ — 95. 37 and 33 have ones that make 10, so add that pair first. All the ones make 15, so 1 ten is traded out.

24 + 36 + 13

Today we'll add three two-digit numbers. The trick? Split each one into tens and ones.

Here's our problem: twenty-four plus thirty-six plus thirteen — equals what?

Let's make two columns — one for the tens, one for the ones.

From twenty-four we get twenty. From thirty-six, thirty. From thirteen, ten.

Twenty plus thirty plus ten equals sixty.

Now the ones: four, six, and three.

Look — four plus six makes ten! Always hunt for combos that make ten.

Grade 2 · Split into tens and ones, then add

Ten plus three is thirteen.

Now add the tens and the ones together: sixty plus thirteen.

Seventy-three! That's twenty-four plus thirty-six plus thirteen. Nice work!
