12 rungs. A star at the top.

165 + 25 = .

How it is taught

0:00 of 3:44

Flats, rods, and cubes show hundreds, tens, and ones.

Trade ten of a smaller block for 1 bigger block.

Read it: Add hundreds, tens and ones

255 + 268: add ones to ones, tens to tens, hundreds to hundreds. The ones make 13, so 10 ones trade for a ten. The tens make 12, so 10 tens trade for a hundred: 523.

  1. Add the ones: 5 + 8 = 13. Trade 10 ones for a ten; 3 ones stay.
  2. Add the tens: 5 + 6 + 1 = 12 tens. Trade 10 tens for a hundred; 2 tens stay.
  3. Add the hundreds: 2 + 2 + 1 = 5 hundreds. 255 + 268 = 523.

10 of a place make 1 of the next: 10 ones make a ten, and 10 tens make a hundred.

The blocks show it: 10 cubes make a rod, and 10 rods make a flat.

Adding by place works for any 2 numbers up to 1000.

Add each place. 10 of a place trade for 1 of the next.

Keeping 13 ones in the ones place.

10 ones trade for a ten: 3 ones stay, and the ten joins the tens.

119 + 11 = ___ — 130. Add the ones: 9 + 1 = 10. Trade 10 of them for a rod, then add the tens and the hundreds.

245 + 137

Our class has 245 stickers, and they earn 137 more. Let's add to find the total.

First, picture 245 — two hundreds, four tens, and five ones.

Then picture 137 — one hundred, three tens, and seven ones.

Now stack them and add column by column.

Start with the ones. Five plus seven makes twelve ones.

Twelve ones is too many for one place — bundle ten of them into a new ten!

Write the two leftover ones in the ones place.

Carry the new ten up to the top of the tens column.

245 + 137 = ?245 stickers, then 137 more — how many in all?245=■ ■│ │ │ │• • • • •137=■│ │ │• • • • • • •245+137• • • • • • • • • •• •5 + 7 = 12 ones= 1 new ten+ 2 ones2183TOTAL382stickers
Grade 2 · Combine hundreds, tens, and ones — with regrouping

Now the tens: one plus four plus three is eight.

Last, the hundreds: two plus one is three.

245 plus 137 equals 382 stickers. Great adding!
