Place value strategies break numbers into hundreds, tens, and ones.

Making a hundred first can make adding friendlier.

Read it: Break a ten when the ones run short

166 − 58: there are 6 ones, and 8 must go. Break a ten into 10 ones: now 16 ones, and 8 can go. 166 − 58 = 108.

  1. Look at the ones: 6 ones, and 8 must go.
  2. Break 1 ten into 10 ones: 1 hundred, 5 tens and 16 ones.
  3. Take away by place: 16 − 8 = 8 ones, 5 − 5 = 0 tens, 1 hundred. 108.

A ten is the same as 10 ones, so breaking it does not change how many there are.

Now there are enough ones to take 8.

Check by adding back: 108 + 58 = 166.

When a place runs short, break 1 of the next place into 10.

Taking 6 from 8 instead, because 8 − 6 is easy.

8 ones must go, and there are only 6. Break a ten first: 16 − 8 = 8. 166 − 58 = 108.

393 − 14 = ___ — 379. 4 ones must go, and there are only 3 ones loose. Break 1 rod into 10 ones. The same number, grouped differently: 8 rods and 13 ones. Take 14 away: 393 − 14 = 379.

326 + 247

Let's add three hundred twenty-six plus two hundred forty-seven. We can use place value to make it easy!

First, break apart three twenty-six. Three hundred, plus twenty, plus six.

Now break apart two forty-seven the same way. Two hundred, plus forty, plus seven.

Now add the hundreds. Three hundred plus two hundred is five hundred.

Next, add the tens. Twenty plus forty is sixty.

Then add the ones. Six plus seven is thirteen.

Now put the parts back together. Five hundred, plus sixty, plus thirteen.

That makes five hundred seventy-three. Three twenty-six plus two forty-seven equals five hundred seventy-three!
