12 rungs. A star at the top.

Diego has 180 flags at the parade. He gives some away. 120 are left. How many did he give away?

Blocks show hundreds, tens, and ones.

Take away the blocks you subtract.

If you cannot take enough, regroup first.

Read it: Break a ten when the ones run short

166 − 58: there are 6 ones, and 8 must go. Break a ten into 10 ones: now 16 ones, and 8 can go. 166 − 58 = 108.

  1. Look at the ones: 6 ones, and 8 must go.
  2. Break 1 ten into 10 ones: 1 hundred, 5 tens and 16 ones.
  3. Take away by place: 16 − 8 = 8 ones, 5 − 5 = 0 tens, 1 hundred. 108.

A ten is the same as 10 ones, so breaking it does not change how many there are.

Now there are enough ones to take 8.

Check by adding back: 108 + 58 = 166.

When a place runs short, break 1 of the next place into 10.

Taking 6 from 8 instead, because 8 − 6 is easy.

8 ones must go, and there are only 6. Break a ten first: 16 − 8 = 8. 166 − 58 = 108.

223 − 14 = ___ — 209. 4 ones must go, and there are only 3 ones loose. Break 1 rod into 10 ones. The same number, grouped differently: 1 rod and 13 ones. Take 14 away: 223 − 14 = 209.

234 − 152

Today we'll subtract two hundred thirty-four minus one hundred fifty-two, using place-value blocks.

Two hundred thirty-four is 2 hundreds, 3 tens, and 4 ones.

We want to take away 1 hundred, 5 tens, and 2 ones.

Grade 2 · Subtract with place-value blocks (one ungroup)

Start with the ones. Four take away two is two.

Now the tens. Three take away five — uh oh, we don't have enough tens!

So we ungroup. Break one hundred into ten tens.

Now we have thirteen tens. Thirteen minus five is eight.

One hundred is left. One minus one is zero.

Two hundred thirty-four minus one hundred fifty-two is eighty-two!
