Skip-Count by 10s and 100s within 1000: Mixed Practice

Students will skip-count by 10s and by 100s within 1000 starting from any multiple. They will identify the pattern of change in the tens and hundreds places respectively, and use this to navigate the number line.

Read it: Jump, don't count by ones

You are standing on 40 on the number line. You could count 41, 42, 43 all the way. Look at the three jumps of ten — they land on 70.

  1. Find 40 on the line. That is where you start.
  2. Jump ten three times: 50, then 60, then 70.
  3. Read the three hops as 40 + 30 = 70.

Counting 41, 42, 43 all the way to 70 works, but it is slow and easy to lose track.

Each jump is the same size, so you land on the next number of the count without counting every one in between.

You already know 40 plus 10 is 50, so one jump replaces counting 41 through 49.

Jump the same amount each time instead of counting by ones.

Making three jumps but landing on 60, because you counted 40 itself as a jump.

40 is where you start. The first jump lands on 50, then 60, then 70.

103 + 10 = ___ — 113. 1 jump of 10 from 103 lands on 113 — 1 mark along, not 10 little steps.

Skip by 10s from 240, then by 100s from 200

Skip-counting means counting in jumps. Today we'll jump by tens, then by hundreds.

Let's start at two hundred forty and jump by tens.

Plus ten — two hundred fifty.

Plus ten — two hundred sixty.

Plus ten — two hundred seventy.

Plus ten — two hundred eighty!

Grade 2 · Counting in big jumps

See the pattern? The tens digit goes up by one each jump. The ones stay at zero.

Now let's jump by hundreds, starting at two hundred.

Plus one hundred — three hundred.

Four hundred.

Five hundred.

Six hundred!

Now the hundreds digit goes up by one. Tens and ones stay at zero.

Skip-counting by tens or hundreds helps us count fast. Great work!
