Skip-counting by hundreds changes only the hundreds digit.

Each jump is one hundred.

Read it: Jump, don't count by ones

You are standing on 40 on the number line. You could count 41, 42, 43 all the way. Look at the three jumps of ten — they land on 70.

  1. Find 40 on the line. That is where you start.
  2. Jump ten three times: 50, then 60, then 70.
  3. Read the three hops as 40 + 30 = 70.

Counting 41, 42, 43 all the way to 70 works, but it is slow and easy to lose track.

Each jump is the same size, so you land on the next number of the count without counting every one in between.

You already know 40 plus 10 is 50, so one jump replaces counting 41 through 49.

Jump the same amount each time instead of counting by ones.

Making three jumps but landing on 60, because you counted 40 itself as a jump.

40 is where you start. The first jump lands on 50, then 60, then 70.

93 + 100 = ___ — 193. 1 jump of 100 from 93 lands on 193 — 1 mark along, not 100 little steps.

100, 200, 300, 400, 500

Skip-counting by hundreds means we add one hundred each time. Let's count from 100 up to 500!

Here is our number line — it stretches from zero all the way to one thousand.

We start at one hundred.

Jump one hundred — that's two hundred.

Another hundred — three hundred.

Another hundred — four hundred.

And one more jump — five hundred!

Look at the pattern. Only the hundreds digit changes — the tens and ones always stay at zero.
