Read it: Jump, don't count by ones

You are standing on 40 on the number line. You could count 41, 42, 43 all the way. Look at the three jumps of ten — they land on 70.

  1. Find 40 on the line. That is where you start.
  2. Jump ten three times: 50, then 60, then 70.
  3. Read the three hops as 40 + 30 = 70.

Counting 41, 42, 43 all the way to 70 works, but it is slow and easy to lose track.

Each jump is the same size, so you land on the next number of the count without counting every one in between.

You already know 40 plus 10 is 50, so one jump replaces counting 41 through 49.

Jump the same amount each time instead of counting by ones.

Making three jumps but landing on 60, because you counted 40 itself as a jump.

40 is where you start. The first jump lands on 50, then 60, then 70.

3 + 10 = ___ — 13. 1 jump of 10 from 3 lands on 13 — 1 mark along, not 10 little steps.

230, 240, 250, 260, 270

Let's skip-count by tens! Each jump adds ten to our number.

We'll start at two hundred thirty. Here it is on our number line.

Add ten — two hundred forty.

Add ten more — two hundred fifty.

Another ten — two hundred sixty.

And one more ten — two hundred seventy.

Look at the pattern! The ones digit always stays zero. Only the tens digit grows by one each jump.
