Each jump adds five.

You land on 5 or 0 ones.

Read it: Jump, don't count by ones

You are standing on 40 on the number line. You could count 41, 42, 43 all the way. Look at the three jumps of ten — they land on 70.

  1. Find 40 on the line. That is where you start.
  2. Jump ten three times: 50, then 60, then 70.
  3. Read the three hops as 40 + 30 = 70.

Counting 41, 42, 43 all the way to 70 works, but it is slow and easy to lose track.

Each jump is the same size, so you land on the next number of the count without counting every one in between.

You already know 40 plus 10 is 50, so one jump replaces counting 41 through 49.

Jump the same amount each time instead of counting by ones.

Making three jumps but landing on 60, because you counted 40 itself as a jump.

40 is where you start. The first jump lands on 50, then 60, then 70.

13 + 5 = ___ — 18. 1 jump of 5 from 13 lands on 18 — 1 mark along, not 5 little steps.

Let's skip-count by fives. Think of nickels — each one is worth five cents. We'll start at one hundred forty-five and hop up by five.

Here's our number line. We start at one hundred forty-five.

Add five. We land on one hundred fifty.

Add five again. One hundred fifty-five.

Keep hopping. One hundred sixty.

And again. One hundred sixty-five.

One more hop. One hundred seventy.

Look at the ones digit each time — five, zero, five, zero. It always flips between zero and five.

After five jumps of five, we land on one hundred seventy. Skip-counting by fives just means adding five every time.
