Minus 1 is one less.

Count back one step.

Read it: Take away within 5

There are 5 apples. 2 are taken away. Count back: 5, 4. 3 are left.

  1. Start with 5.
  2. Take away 2.
  3. Count back: 5, 4. Now 3.

Taking away makes a number smaller, so you count back, not on.

You start at 5, the number you have, not at 1.

2 taken away from 5 leaves 3 apples on the tray.

Start with what you have. Count back.

Saying 2, the ones taken away, for how many are left.

Count what is still there: 3 apples.

3 − 1 = ___ — 2. Count back 1 from 3: 2.

4 − 1

You have four strawberries. You eat one. How many are left?

Let's use a number line. Here are zero, one, two, three, four, five.

We start at four — that's how many strawberries we have.

Minus one means we hop back just one step.

We land on three!

So four minus one equals three.

Here's a secret: minus one is always the number that comes BEFORE.

The number before four is three. That's our answer.

Kindergarten · Minus 1 means the number before

Four minus one is three. Great counting!
