Taking nothing away leaves the number.

A number minus itself is zero.

Read it: Adding or taking away 0

4 counters. 0 more come in. There are still 4: 4 + 0 = 4.

  1. Count the counters: 4.
  2. 0 more come in, or 0 go away.
  3. Nothing changed: still 4.

0 means none.

Adding none changes nothing, so the number stays.

Taking none away leaves the number the same too.

Add 0 or take away 0: the number stays the same.

Saying 5, as if 1 more came in.

0 came in. Nothing changed: still 4.

1 − 0 = ___ — 1. Taking away 0 changes nothing: still 1.

4 − 0

We have four cookies. Watch what happens when we take away zero!

Here are our four yummy cookies. One, two, three, four.

Let's write the problem: four minus zero.

Look at this little zero. Zero means nothing — not even one!

So we take away nothing. Every cookie stays right where it is.

Let's count what's left: one, two, three, four.

Four minus zero is four. The number didn't change at all!

Remember: when you subtract zero, the number stays the same. You've got it!
