Subtract means take some away.

The difference is what is left.

Read it: Take away within 5

There are 5 apples. 2 are taken away. Count back: 5, 4. 3 are left.

  1. Start with 5.
  2. Take away 2.
  3. Count back: 5, 4. Now 3.

Taking away makes a number smaller, so you count back, not on.

You start at 5, the number you have, not at 1.

2 taken away from 5 leaves 3 apples on the tray.

Start with what you have. Count back.

Saying 2, the ones taken away, for how many are left.

Count what is still there: 3 apples.

5 − 1 = ___ — 4. Count back 1 from 5: 4.

5 − 2 = 3

Let's subtract! Imagine you have five shiny apples.

Here they are — one, two, three, four, five.

Now you give two apples to a friend. How many do you have left?

We can write this as five minus two.

Take away the second apple.

Now let's count what's left — one, two, three.
