Multiply and Divide Fluently Within 100: Facts for 3, 4, and 6

Students build fluency with multiplication and division facts for 3, 4, and 6 using strategies such as doubling (4 = 2 x 2, 6 = 2 x 3), the distributive property, and known facts. They practice relating each division fact to its corresponding multiplication fact.

A 6 fact can split as 5 groups plus 1 group.

Those two products add to the 6 fact.

Read it: Skip count by fives

You have three trays. Five apples sit on each. Don't count all fifteen — look at the skip: five, ten, fifteen.

  1. See three trays with five apples on each.
  2. Skip count by fives: five, ten, fifteen.
  3. Say three times five is fifteen.

Counting every apple from one works, but fifteen apples take a long time, and you can lose a tray.

Each tray holds the same five apples, so after the first tray you already know the next jump is five more.

Three jumps of five land on fifteen, which is three trays of five without touching every apple.

When trays hold matching amounts, skip count the trays, not every apple.

Adding three and five and saying eight apples in all.

Three trays of five is not three plus five — skip five, ten, fifteen.

3 × 2 = ___ — 6. 3 trays with 2 apples in each: skip-count the trays — 2, 4, 6.

4 × 7 = 28 (doubling strategy)

Today we're learning a clever shortcut for our four times tables — doubling!

Let's solve four times seven. We'll use a number line, jumping by seven each time.

We already know two sevens make fourteen — that's from our two times tables.

Here's the trick: four is just double two, so four sevens is double two sevens.

Double fourteen is twenty-eight!

4 × 7 using doubling4 × 7 = ?028714212 × 74 × 7double it!2 × 7 = 144 × 7 = 14 + 14 = 2828 ÷ 4 = 7ANSWER284 × 7
Grade 3 · Doubling our 2s to master our 4s

So four times seven equals twenty-eight.

And every multiplication fact gives us a division fact for free.

If four sevens make twenty-eight, then twenty-eight split into four equal groups is seven.

Twenty-eight! Doubling turns tricky fours into easy twos.
