Divide Multi-Digit Whole Numbers Using the Standard Long Division Algorithm

Students apply the standard long division algorithm (Divide, Multiply, Subtract, Bring Down) to find whole-number quotients with up to four-digit dividends and two-digit divisors. They interpret remainders appropriately in context.

Long division takes one digit of the dividend at a time.

Divide, multiply, subtract, then bring down the next digit.

Read it: Long division, digit by digit

828 ÷ 4: 8 ÷ 4 = 2, so write 2 over the 8. Bring down the 2: 4 does not fit into 2, so write 0. Bring down the 8: 28 ÷ 4 = 7. So 828 ÷ 4 = 207.

  1. Divide: how many times does the divisor fit into the part you are looking at?
  2. Multiply that digit by the divisor, and subtract.
  3. Bring down the next digit and divide again, until no digits are left.

Each round finds one digit of the quotient, from the left, place by place.

When the divisor does not fit, that place of the quotient is 0, and the 0 is written.

Multiplying the quotient by the divisor gives the dividend back: 207 × 4 = 828.

Divide, multiply, subtract, bring down, and write a digit in the quotient every time a digit comes down.

Skipping the 0: 828 ÷ 4 = 27.

4 does not fit into 2, so that place of the quotient is 0: 828 ÷ 4 = 207.

672 ÷ 12 = ___ — 56. 12 fits into 67 5 times: 60, 7 left. Bring down the 2. 12 fits into 72 6 times: 72, 0 left. So 56, and 56 × 12 = 672.

864 ÷ 24

Today we'll divide a big number by a two-digit number using long division. Let's try eight hundred sixty-four divided by twenty-four.

Write twenty-four outside the long division house, and eight hundred sixty-four inside.

Start on the left. Can twenty-four fit inside eight?

No — eight is too small. So we look at the first two digits, eighty-six, instead.

How many groups of twenty-four fit in eighty-six?

Three groups! Three times twenty-four is seventy-two, and four times would be ninety-six — too big. Write three on top.

Multiply: three times twenty-four is seventy-two. Write seventy-two underneath eighty-six.

Subtract: eighty-six minus seventy-two is fourteen.

Bring down the next digit, the four, to make one hundred forty-four.

How many twenty-fours fit in one hundred forty-four?

Exactly six! Six times twenty-four is one hundred forty-four. Write six on top.

Write one hundred forty-four underneath.

Subtract: one forty-four minus one forty-four is zero. No remainder!

Grade 5 · Divide, Multiply, Subtract, Bring Down

Eight hundred sixty-four divided by twenty-four is thirty-six. Great work!
