Fluently Divide Multi-Digit Numbers

Students develop and demonstrate fluency with the standard long-division algorithm for multi-digit dividends and divisors. They estimate quotients, interpret remainders appropriately for context, and check their work using multiplication.

Long division peels the dividend one place at a time.

Estimate a digit, multiply, subtract, and bring down.

Read it: Long division, digit by digit

618 ÷ 6: 6 ÷ 6 = 1, so write 1 over the 6. Bring down the 1: 6 does not fit into 1, so write 0. Bring down the 8: 18 ÷ 6 = 3. So 618 ÷ 6 = 103.

  1. Divide: how many times does the divisor fit into the part you are looking at?
  2. Multiply that digit by the divisor, and subtract.
  3. Bring down the next digit and divide again, until no digits are left.

Each cycle finds one digit of the quotient, from the left, place by place.

When the divisor does not fit, that place of the quotient is 0, and the 0 is written.

Multiplying the quotient by the divisor gives the dividend back: 103 × 6 = 618.

Divide, multiply, subtract, bring down, and write a digit in the quotient every time a digit comes down.

Skipping the 0: 618 ÷ 6 = 13.

6 does not fit into 1, so that place of the quotient is 0: 618 ÷ 6 = 103.

3090 ÷ 15 = ___ — 206. 15 fits into 30 2 times: 30, 0 left. Bring down the 9. 15 does not fit into 9: 0. Bring down the 0. 15 fits into 90 6 times: 90, 0 left. So 206, and 206 × 15 = 3090.

875 ÷ 25

Today we'll divide eight hundred seventy-five by twenty-five. Two-digit divisors look tricky, but the same long-division steps still work.

We write twenty-five outside the long-division house and eight seventy-five inside.

First, let's estimate. Twenty-five is close to thirty, and nine hundred divided by thirty is thirty. So our answer should be near thirty.

Twenty-five doesn't fit into eight, so we look at eighty-seven. How many twenty-fives fit inside eighty-seven?

Three! Three times twenty-five is seventy-five, and four would be a hundred — too big. Write three on top, above the seven.

Now multiply: three times twenty-five is seventy-five. Write seventy-five underneath eighty-seven.

Subtract: eighty-seven minus seventy-five is twelve.

Bring down the next digit, the five. Now we have one hundred twenty-five.

How many twenty-fives fit inside one hundred twenty-five?

Exactly five. Write five on top, above the last digit.

Multiply: five times twenty-five is one hundred twenty-five.

One twenty-five minus one twenty-five is zero. No remainder.

Grade 6 · Long division with a two-digit divisor

Eight hundred seventy-five divided by twenty-five is thirty-five. And our estimate of about thirty was close — so we know our answer is reasonable.
