Divide Decimals to Hundredths Using Models and Place Value Strategies

Students divide decimals to the hundredths place using concrete models, drawings, and strategies based on place value and the relationship between multiplication and division. They interpret and solve division problems involving decimal dividends and whole-number or decimal divisors.

Decimal division keeps place value in the quotient.

Tenths divided by a whole still come out as tenths.

Read it: Dividing tenths

11.2 ÷ 0.8: name both in tenths. 11.2 is 112 tenths and 0.8 is 8 tenths. How many 8 tenths fit into 112 tenths? 112 ÷ 8 = 14.

  1. Name both numbers in the same place: tenths, or hundredths if either number has hundredths.
  2. Divide the whole numbers: how many of the divisor fit into the dividend?
  3. When the divisor is a whole number, share the tenths or hundredths, and the answer stays in that place.

Asking how many 8 tenths fit into 112 tenths is the same as asking how many 8s fit into 112.

Both numbers are counted in tenths, so 11.2 ÷ 0.8 and 112 ÷ 8 have the same answer: 14.

Multiplying both numbers by 10 leaves the quotient the same.

Name both numbers in one place, then divide as with whole numbers.

Renaming only 0.8 as 8: 11.2 ÷ 8 is a different division.

Name both in tenths: 112 ÷ 8 = 14.

37.6 ÷ 8 = ___ — 4.7. 37.6 is 376 tenths; 376 ÷ 8 = 47 tenths: 4.7.

1.44 ÷ 4

Today we'll divide a decimal. Four friends want to share one dollar and forty-four cents fairly. How much does each get?

We can write this as one point four four divided by four, using the long division house.

First, place a decimal point in the answer right above the one in the dividend — same place value, same spot.

Look at the ones place. Can four go into one? No — so we write zero above the one.

Now look at the tenths together with the one. How many fours fit inside fourteen?

Three! Write three in the tenths place, right above the four.

Multiply: three times four is twelve. Write twelve underneath.

Subtract: fourteen minus twelve is two.

Bring down the next digit — the four in the hundredths place — to make twenty-four.

How many fours fit inside twenty-four? Six! Write six in the hundredths place.

Multiply: six times four is twenty-four.

Twenty-four minus twenty-four is zero. No remainder!

One point four four divided by four is zero point three six. Each friend gets thirty-six cents. Awesome work!
