Multiply Decimals to Hundredths Using Models and Place Value Strategies

Students multiply decimals to the hundredths using area models, place value reasoning, and connecting to whole number multiplication. They determine where to place the decimal point in the product by reasoning about the size of the factors.

A product of two decimals can be less than either factor.

Count the decimal places in both factors.

Read it: Multiplying tenths

2.7 × 7: 2.7 is 27 tenths. 27 × 7 = 189, so 27 tenths × 7 is 189 tenths, which is 18.9.

  1. Name each decimal in its smallest place: 2.7 is 27 tenths.
  2. Multiply the whole numbers.
  3. Name the product in the right place: tenths times a whole number are tenths, and a tenth of a tenth is a hundredth.

2.7 × 7 is 7 groups of 27 tenths, so it is 189 tenths.

10 tenths make 1, so 189 tenths is 18.9.

Tenths times a whole number make tenths, and a tenth of a tenth is a hundredth: name the product in the place it makes.

Multiply as whole numbers, then name the product in tenths, hundredths or thousandths.

Leaving the point out: 2.7 × 7 = 189.

189 is a count of tenths: 2.7 × 7 = 18.9.

6.7 × 8 = ___ — 53.6. 6.7 is 67 tenths; 67 × 8 = 536 tenths: 53.6.

Today we'll multiply decimals. What is zero point four times zero point three?

Both factors are less than one, so our answer should be smaller than each of them. Let's prove it.

First, pretend the decimal points aren't there. Just look at the digits — four and three.

Four times three is twelve. We'll come back to this in a moment.

Now think about place value. Zero point four means four tenths, and zero point three means three tenths.

When we multiply tenths by tenths, we get hundredths.

Another way to see it — count the decimal places. One in zero point four, one in zero point three. That's two places total.

So in twelve, we shift the decimal point two places to the left.

Twelve becomes zero point one two — twelve hundredths.

Zero point four times zero point three is zero point one two. Smaller than both factors, just like we predicted!
