Teen numbers use two digits.

The 1 means one ten.

Read it: Write a teen number: 10 and some more

14 counters: a full frame of 10 and 4 more. 10 and 4 more is 14, so we write 14.

  1. Fill the first frame: 10.
  2. Count the rest: 4.
  3. 10 and 4 more is 14. Write 14.

A full ten-frame always holds 10.

The rest are the ones, and the ones are the last digit.

We write the ten first, then the ones: 14.

Count 10, then the rest. Write 1, then the ones.

Writing 41 for 10 and 4 more.

The ten comes first: 1 ten and 4 ones is 14.

Type the numeral for: sixteen. — 16. Sixteen is 10 and 6 more, written 16.

Counting 13 dots and writing 13

Let's count these dots together. How many do you see?

Ten dots fill the ten-frame. That's one whole group of ten.

And three more dots on the side. Eleven, twelve, thirteen!

We write thirteen with two digits. First, a one for the group of ten.

Then, a three for the three extra dots.
