Understand and Measure Liquid Volume in Liters

Students will learn that liquid volume measures how much a container holds, using liters (l) as the standard unit. They will practice reading graduated cylinders or beakers and estimating liquid volumes of containers using liters as a benchmark.

Liquid volume is how much liquid a container holds.

We measure that amount in liters.

A liter is written with a capital L.

Read it: Read each jug, then add

You have a jug of 3 liters and a jug of 4 liters. Guessing the total is easy to get wrong. Look at the water in each jug, then put them together.

  1. Read the first jug: 3 liters.
  2. Read the second jug: 4 liters.
  3. Pour them together: 3 + 4 = 7 liters.

Each jug has its own scale, so read the number at the top of the water.

Each jug already has a reading, so you only add those two numbers.

3 liters plus 4 liters is 7, which you can see when the water sits in one jug.

Read how much is in each jug, then add the two amounts.

Reading the empty space above the water, and saying jug A holds 5 liters when the water is at 3.

Read the number at the top of the water. 3 liters and 4 liters make 7.

Jug A shows 11 liters. Jug B shows 6 liters. How many liters in all? — 17. Read each jug, then add: 11 + 6 = 17 liters.

Reading a beaker filled to 3 L

Have you ever poured juice into a cup? The amount of liquid that fits inside is called liquid volume.

We measure liquid volume in liters. We write a liter with a capital L.

Here is a beaker — a special cup with measuring marks on the side.

Each line on the side shows one more liter: one, two, three, four, five.

Now let's pour some water into the beaker.

To read the volume, look at the top of the water. Which mark does it line up with?

Let's count up: one liter, two liters, three liters!

Grade 3 · Measuring liquid in liters

Three liters is about three big water bottles. That's a lot of water!

We measured the liquid volume. The beaker holds three liters!
