Mass and liquid volume are amounts in a story.

Equal groups of liters or grams mean multiply.

Read it: Amounts as jumps

A tank holds 12 L of water. 5 L is used. Start at 12 on the line and jump back 5: it lands on 7 L.

  1. Find the amount you start with: 12 L.
  2. Jump on if some is added, and jump back if some is used.
  3. Read where the jump lands: 12 − 5 = 7 L.

Liters, kilograms and grams can all sit on a number line.

Water poured in moves you on, and water used moves you back.

The unit stays the same, so the answer is in liters too.

Start at the first amount, jump on to add or back to take away, and keep the unit.

Adding 12 and 5 because there are two numbers, and saying 17 L.

The water was used, so it goes down. Jump back 5 from 12: 7 L.

A sack of rice is 15 kg. 8 kg more is added. How many kilograms is it now? — 23. 15 + 8 = 23 kg.

4 bottles × 2 liters each

Liam fills four water bottles for a hike. Each bottle holds two liters. How much water does he carry in all?

We have four equal groups of two liters — that means we can multiply: four times two.

Let's count it up on a number line from zero to ten liters.

Bottle one adds two liters. Hop to two.

Bottle two adds two more. Hop to four.

Bottle three. Hop to six.

Bottle four. Hop all the way to eight.

Grade 3 · Multiplying liquid volume

So four times two equals eight.

Liam carries eight liters of water in total. Nice work!
