Summarize Numerical Data Sets

Students write a full summary of a numerical data set by reporting the number of observations, describing how it was measured, giving measures of center and variability, and relating those summary statistics back to the context of the question that motivated data collection.

A data summary names center, spread, and what was measured.

Read it: The center of a data set

The data 9, 3, 10 and 6 total 28. Shared evenly among the 4 values, that is a mean of 7. In order, 3, 6, 9, 10, the middle pair is 6 and 9: the median is 7.5.

  1. For the mean, add the values: 9 + 3 + 10 + 6 = 28.
  2. Divide the total by how many values there are: 28 ÷ 4 = 7.
  3. For the median, order the values and find the middle: halfway between 6 and 9 is 7.5.

The mean is what each value would be if the total were shared out evenly.

The median has as many values below it as above it.

With an even number of values, the median is halfway between the middle pair.

Mean: add, then divide by how many. Median: put them in order, then find the middle.

Taking the middle of the list as it is written: 3 and 10 sit in the middle of 9, 3, 10, 6, so the median is 6.5.

Put them in order first: 3, 6, 9, 10. The middle pair is 6 and 9, so the median is 7.5.

The mean of 16, 20, 24, 32 is ___ — 23. 16 + 20 + 24 + 32 = 92, and 92 ÷ 4 = 23.

Hours of sleep — n = 7

Last night, seven friends each wrote down how many hours they slept. Let's summarize what they found.

Here are their numbers: six, seven, eight, eight, eight, nine, and ten hours.

We can plot each value as a dot above a number line. Each dot stands for one student's hours of sleep.

Grade 6 · Reporting n, attribute, center, and spread in context

First, we count the observations. There are seven dots, so n equals seven — all measured in hours of sleep.

The values are already in order. With seven numbers, the fourth is the middle. The median is eight hours.

For the mean, we add every value, then divide by n. The sum is fifty-six, and fifty-six divided by seven equals eight. The mean is eight hours.

For variability, the range is the highest value minus the lowest. Ten minus six equals four. The range is four hours.

Putting it back in context: a typical student in our class sleeps about eight hours, and the amounts vary by four hours across the group.

Our complete summary: seven students, hours of sleep, mean and median both eight, range four. That is a full data summary!

Now you try. Find the value with the tallest stack. Which value is most common?
