Construct and Interpret Box Plots

Students construct box plots (box-and-whisker plots) from a five-number summary and use them to describe and compare data distributions. They identify the minimum, Q1, median, Q3, and maximum and interpret the box and whiskers in context.

The box is the middle half of the data.

IQR is the length of that box.

Read it: Five numbers on a box plot

This box plot's whiskers reach 5 and 60, the least and the greatest value in the data; its box runs from 20 to 45, and the line inside the box is at 30. So the median is 30, the IQR is 45 − 20 = 25, and the range is 60 − 5 = 55.

  1. Read the line inside the box: that is the median.
  2. Read the box's two edges: the lower and upper quartiles. Their difference is the IQR.
  3. Read where the whiskers end: the least and the greatest value in the data. Their difference is the range.

A box plot shows 5 numbers about the data, not every value.

The box holds the middle half of the data.

Each whisker holds the quarter of the data beyond the box, so the plot shows the shape too: here 30 to 60 is longer than 5 to 30, so the data stretch out toward the high values.

The median is the line in the box, the IQR is the box's length, and the range runs whisker to whisker.

Reading the box's length, 25, as the range.

The range runs whisker to whisker: 60 − 5 = 55. The box's length is the IQR.

A box runs from 35 to 75, and its whiskers reach 25 and 90. The IQR is ___ — 40. The IQR is the box's length: 75 − 35 = 40.

Build a box plot from 11 reading times

Eleven students wrote down how many minutes they read last night. Let's turn their data into a box plot.

Here are their times, already in order from least to greatest.

The smallest value is fifty and the largest is ninety-five.

The middle value — the median — is the sixth one in the list: seventy-five.

Q1 is the middle of the lower half. The middle of fifty, sixty, sixty-five, seventy, and seventy is sixty-five.

Q3 is the middle of the upper half. The middle of eighty, eighty-five, eighty-five, ninety, and ninety-five is eighty-five.

Now we draw a number line that covers our data, from forty to one hundred.

Plot all five numbers: min, Q1, median, Q3, and max.

Connect Q1 and Q3 to make a box. The box holds the middle fifty percent of the data.

Draw a vertical line through the box at the median.

Stretch whiskers from the box out to the smallest and largest values.

The whiskers show the full range. The box shows the middle half — half the readers fell between sixty-five and eighty-five minutes.

Grade 6 · Five-number summary → box-and-whisker plot

That's our box plot — five numbers tell the whole story of the data!

Now you try. Read the median on this box plot. What is the median?

What you see

While they climb, your page writes one true line to ask about tonight, and a short note each Sunday.
