Subtract means take away.

What is left is the difference.

Read it: Take away, count back

There are 8 apples. 2 are taken away. Count back: 8, 7. 6 are left.

  1. Start with 8.
  2. Take away 2.
  3. Count back: 8, 7. Now 6.

Taking away makes a number smaller, so you count back, not on.

You start at 8, the number you have, not at 1.

2 taken away from 8 leaves 6 apples on the tray.

Start with what you have. Count back.

Saying 2, the ones taken away, for how many are left.

Count what is still there: 6 apples.

4 − 1 = ___ — 3. Count back 1 from 4: 3.

5 − 2 = 3

Look! We have five yummy apples.

We're going to take two apples away. That's five minus two.

Take one apple away.

And take another one away.

Let's count what's left. One, two, three!
