Subtract means take away.

The difference is what is left.

Read it: Take away, count back

There are 8 apples. 2 are taken away. Count back: 8, 7. 6 are left.

  1. Start with 8.
  2. Take away 2.
  3. Count back: 8, 7. Now 6.

Taking away makes a number smaller, so you count back, not on.

You start at 8, the number you have, not at 1.

2 taken away from 8 leaves 6 apples on the tray.

Start with what you have. Count back.

Saying 2, the ones taken away, for how many are left.

Count what is still there: 6 apples.

8 − 1 = ___ — 7. Count back 1 from 8: 7.

7 − 3

Imagine seven birds sitting on a branch. Three fly away. How many stay?

Here are our seven birds. Let's count them: one, two, three, four, five, six, seven!

One bird flies away. Cross it off!

Another bird flies away. That's two gone.

And one more flies away. That makes three birds gone.

Now let's count what's left: one, two, three, four. Four birds stay!

We can write this. We started with seven, then took away...

...three. Seven minus three equals what?

Four! Seven take away three is four.

Seven minus three is four. Great counting!
