Sorting puts like things together.

A category is a matching group.

Read it: Sort, then count

5 shapes are mixed up. Sort them: the circles on top, the rest below. Now count the circles: 3.

  1. Look at each shape.
  2. Put each one with its kind.
  3. Count each group.

Sorting puts the same kind together.

A sorted group is easy to count.

Then you can say which group has more.

Sort into kinds. Count each kind.

Counting every shape and saying 5 circles.

Sort first. Only the circles count: 3.

Sort 8 shapes: 4 are circles. How many are not circles? — 4. 8 shapes, 4 circles: the other 4 are not circles.

Sort 5 toys: circles and squares

We have a pile of toys all mixed up. Let's take a look!

Some toys are circles, like balls. Some are squares, like blocks.

Let's make two groups: a circle group and a square group.

Here's a circle. It belongs with the circles!

Here's a square. It belongs with the squares!

Another circle. Into the circle group it goes.

Another square. Into the square group.

One more circle. There it goes!

Let's count: three circles and two squares.

We sorted every toy. Each one found its group. Great work!
