Describe measurable attributes of objects

Students will identify and describe measurable attributes of objects such as length (long/short), weight (heavy/light), and height (tall/short), using appropriate vocabulary. They recognize that a single object can have multiple measurable attributes.

12 rungs. A star at the top.

A tape measure measures which of these?

An attribute is how something is measured.

Width tells how wide.

Read it: What can you measure?

Long and short tell about length. Heavy and light tell about weight. Each word tells about one thing you can measure.

  1. Look at the 2 things.
  2. Ask: longer, taller, heavier, or holds more?
  3. That word tells you what you measure.

Length tells how long something is.

Height tells how tall it is, and weight tells how heavy.

Capacity tells how much a jug or a cup can hold.

Each measure tells about one thing: how long, how tall, how heavy, or how much it holds.

Calling a long thing heavy because it is big.

Long is about length. Heavy is about weight: use a balance.

Which word fits 2 cups filled with water? — holds more. Fill both cups. The one with more water holds more.

Length, height, and weight

Today we'll learn three ways to describe things around us — length, height, and weight.

Look at this pencil. It is long. Long describes its length.

Now look at this crayon. It is short. Long and short tell us about length.

Kindergarten · Three ways to describe things

Here is a tree. The tree is tall. Tall describes its height.

And here is a flower. The flower is short. Tall and short tell us about height.

What about weight? This rock is heavy — it pulls down hard.

But this feather is light — it floats up easily!

One object can have many attributes. A backpack is long, and a backpack is heavy.

Length, height, and weight — three ways to describe the world. Great work!
