Repeated addition of tens means adding ten again and again.

Each group is ten.

Read it: Count by tens

5 tens: 5 groups of 10. Jump 10 at a time from 0: 10, 20, 30, 40, 50. So 5 tens = 50.

  1. Start at 0.
  2. Jump 10 for each ten: count by tens.
  3. The last number you land on is how many.

Each jump is a group of 10, so 5 jumps make 50.

10 + 10 + 10 is 3 tens: 30.

Counting by tens is faster than counting by ones.

Count by tens: each ten is one jump of 10.

Saying 5 tens is 5.

5 tens is 5 groups of 10: 10, 20, 30, 40, 50. That is 50.

9 groups of 10 = ___ — 90. Count by tens: 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90. 9 tens = 90.

10 + 10 + 10 + 10

Mia has four packs of stickers. Each pack has ten stickers inside. How many stickers does she have in all?

The first pack has ten stickers. We write ten.

The second pack adds another ten. Ten plus ten is twenty.

The third pack adds ten more. Twenty plus ten is thirty.

And the last pack adds ten again. Thirty plus ten is forty.

On a number line, we hop by tens: zero, ten, twenty, thirty, forty.
