Times 9 means nine equal groups.

You can use a times-ten fact and subtract one group.

Read it: Equal jumps for times and divide

6 × 4 = 24: 6 jumps of 4 from 0 land on 24: 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24. And 24 ÷ 4 = 6: it takes 6 jumps of 4 to reach 24.

  1. Start at 0.
  2. Jump the same size each time.
  3. For ×, count the jumps and read where you land. For ÷, count how many jumps reach the number.

Each jump is one group, so 6 jumps of 4 is 6 groups of 4.

Times and divide use the same jumps: 6 × 4 = 24 and 24 ÷ 4 = 6.

A line holds big facts that are too many to draw one by one.

Equal jumps from 0: the number of jumps times the size of a jump is where you land.

Counting the ticks instead of the jumps.

Count the jumps: from 0 to 24 is 6 jumps of 4.

4 × 9 = ___ — 36. 4 jumps of 9: 9, 18, 27, 36. So 4 × 9 = 36.

9 × 6

What is nine times six?

Here's a shortcut: nine is one less than ten, so we can write nine as ten minus one.

First, let's multiply by ten instead, since that's an easy fact: ten times six.

Ten times six is sixty.

But we only wanted nine groups, not ten — so we take away one extra group of six.

Sixty minus six is fifty-four.

So nine times six equals fifty-four! Ten times as many, minus one group, every time.

What is 9 × 6?9 = 10 − 110×6=6060 − 6 =We took away one extra group of 6549 × 6 = 54ANSWER549 × 6
