Division asks how many equal groups fit.

The related times fact is the check.

Read it: Divide: count the equal groups

12 apples in groups of 3. Count the groups: 4. So 12 ÷ 3 = 4.

  1. Make groups of the number you divide by.
  2. Count the groups.
  3. Check it both ways: 4 × 3 = 12, so 12 ÷ 3 = 4.

Every group holds the same, so you count groups, not apples.

Division undoes multiplication: 4 groups of 3 make 12.

If you know 4 × 3 = 12, you know 12 ÷ 3 = 4.

To divide by 3, count how many groups of 3 make the total.

Counting all 12 apples and saying 12.

12 is the total. Count the groups of 3: there are 4.

35 ÷ 7 = ___ — 5. 5 groups of 7 make 35: 35 ÷ 7 = 5, because 5 × 7 = 35.

35 ÷ 7

We have thirty-five counters, and we want to split them into equal groups of seven. How many groups will we get?

Let's write this as a division problem: thirty-five divided by seven.

Dividing by seven means asking: seven times what number equals thirty-five?

Let's count by sevens on a number line, starting at zero, until we reach thirty-five.

Zero, seven, fourteen, twenty-one, twenty-eight, thirty-five — that's five jumps of seven!

So seven times five equals thirty-five.

That means thirty-five divided by seven equals five.

Five equal groups of seven make thirty-five. Great work!
