Grade 3 · Multiplication and Division Fluency · question 1 of 3

0 of 12

12 rungs. A star at the top.

ten times 1 = . What is the product?

How it is taught

0:00 of 3:54

Times 10 is ten equal groups of that number.

The product is the number with a zero in the ones.

Read it: Equal jumps for times and divide

6 × 4 = 24: 6 jumps of 4 from 0 land on 24: 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24. And 24 ÷ 4 = 6: it takes 6 jumps of 4 to reach 24.

  1. Start at 0.
  2. Jump the same size each time.
  3. For ×, count the jumps and read where you land. For ÷, count how many jumps reach the number.

Each jump is one group, so 6 jumps of 4 is 6 groups of 4.

Times and divide use the same jumps: 6 × 4 = 24 and 24 ÷ 4 = 6.

A line holds big facts that are too many to draw one by one.

Equal jumps from 0: the number of jumps times the size of a jump is where you land.

Counting the ticks instead of the jumps.

Count the jumps: from 0 to 24 is 6 jumps of 4.

6 × 10 = ___ — 60. 6 jumps of 10: 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60. So 6 × 10 = 60.

3 × 10

Three times ten — let's find a fast way to solve it.

Three times ten means three equal groups of ten.

Skip-count by tens for each group: ten, twenty, thirty.

3 × 10 = ?10101010, 20, 30330Add a zero on the end!× 10 → slide the digit, add a 06 × 10 = ?6 × 10 = 60ANSWER303 × 10Slide over, add a 0!
Grade 3 · Worked example: 3 × 10

Look closely: three became thirty. We just added a zero!

That's the pattern: when you multiply by ten, slide the digit over and add a zero.

Let's try it with six times ten.

Six became sixty — the pattern works every time!

So three times ten equals thirty. Slide over, add a zero, and you're done!
