Dividing by two splits into two equal groups.

The related times fact is the check.

Read it: Divide: count the equal groups

12 apples in groups of 3. Count the groups: 4. So 12 ÷ 3 = 4.

  1. Make groups of the number you divide by.
  2. Count the groups.
  3. Check it both ways: 4 × 3 = 12, so 12 ÷ 3 = 4.

Every group holds the same, so you count groups, not apples.

Division undoes multiplication: 4 groups of 3 make 12.

If you know 4 × 3 = 12, you know 12 ÷ 3 = 4.

To divide by 3, count how many groups of 3 make the total.

Counting all 12 apples and saying 12.

12 is the total. Count the groups of 3: there are 4.

4 ÷ 2 = ___ — 2. 2 groups of 2 make 4: 4 ÷ 2 = 2, because 2 × 2 = 4.

8 ÷ 2

How many groups of two fit inside eight?

Here's our problem: eight divided by two.

Every division fact has a multiplication fact hiding inside it.

So let's think: two times what number makes eight?

Picture eight things split into groups of two.

One group, two groups, three groups, four groups — four groups of two in all.

Two times four equals eight.

So eight divided by two equals four.

Eight divided by two is four. Whenever you divide by two, ask: two times what makes this number?
