Interpret Division as Equal Sharing

Students learn to interpret a division expression such as 56 ÷ 8 as finding how many objects each person gets when 56 objects are shared equally among 8 people (partitive division). They use manipulatives and drawings to model fair-share situations and connect them to division notation.

Equal sharing splits a total into same-size groups.

Division tells how many each group gets.

Read it: Divide: deal round, or make groups

20 apples, 4 trays. Deal 1 apple to each tray, round and round, until all 20 are gone: 5 in each.

  1. Deal 1 apple to each tray, until none are left.
  2. Count the apples in 1 tray: 20 ÷ 4 = 5.
  3. Or make groups of 5 and count them: 4 groups, so 20 ÷ 5 = 4.

Dealing 1 at a time, round and round, keeps every tray the same.

4 trays of 5 make 20, so 20 ÷ 4 = 5 and 20 ÷ 5 = 4.

Division asks how many in each group, or how many groups.

To share, deal round until none are left. The number in 1 tray is the answer.

Saying 4, because there are 4 trays.

4 is the number of trays. The answer is how many are in each: 5.

8 apples are shared equally into 4 bags. How many apples are in each bag? — 2. Deal round into 4 bags: each gets 2. 8 ÷ 4 = 2, because 4 × 2 = 8.

12 ÷ 3

We have twelve stickers to share fairly with three friends. How many will each friend get?

Here are our twelve stickers, all lined up.

And here are our three friends, each with their own spot.

Sharing twelve things equally with three friends is written as twelve divided by three.

Let's give one sticker to each friend. That's three stickers handed out.

Another round — one more sticker for each friend.

Keep going. One more sticker for everyone.

And the last round. All twelve stickers are shared!

Now let's count what each friend has. Four stickers each!
