Read it: Name a shape by its sides

Count the sides to name a shape. A pentagon and a hexagon can look alike until you count.

  1. Start at one corner.
  2. Go around once and count each side.
  3. The number of sides gives the name.

A shape keeps its name when it is turned or flipped.

Every side ends at a corner, so a shape has as many corners as sides.

A square and a rectangle are quadrilaterals too.

Triangle, quadrilateral, pentagon, hexagon: count the sides, then name it.

Calling a shape a triangle because it has a point on top.

Count the sides. A shape with a point on top can be a pentagon.

2 quadrilaterals have how many sides in all? — 8. Each quadrilateral has 4 sides: 4 + 4 = 8.

Is this shape a quadrilateral?
