Identify Triangles, Quadrilaterals, Pentagons, and Hexagons

Students identify and name triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, and hexagons by counting the number of sides and angles. Students understand these shapes as members of polygon families regardless of their orientation or exact size.

A polygon is named by how many straight sides it has.

Turned shapes still keep their names.

Read it: Count sides, not tilt

A rectangle sits on the table. Someone turns it. Count the sides and the corners — not how it sits.

  1. Count the sides of the turned shape: 4.
  2. Count the corners: 4.
  3. Four sides and four corners: it is still a rectangle.

Tilting a shape changes how it looks, not how many sides it has.

The name comes from sides and corners, not from sitting flat on a side.

A rectangle standing on a corner still has 4 sides and 4 corners.

Count the sides and the corners. Turning does not change the name.

Calling a turned rectangle a diamond because it no longer sits flat.

Count the sides. Four sides and four corners is still a rectangle.

A flat shape has 3 sides. It sits turned on 1 point. What is it called? — triangle. Turning a shape moves it; it does not rename it. 3 sides make it a triangle.

Naming a pentagon by counting its sides

Look at this flat shape. It has straight sides — that makes it a polygon. Let's name it by counting!

We start at one side... one.

Two.

Three.

Four.

And five! It has five sides — and five corners too.

This polygon with five sides is called a pentagon.

Grade 2 · Polygon families

Other polygons get their names the same way: three sides is a triangle, four is a quadrilateral, and six is a hexagon.

Count the sides, then say the name. You've got it!

Now you try. Pick this shape's name from the list. Choose the shape's name.
