Identify Properties of Two-Dimensional Figures

Students review and identify key properties of two-dimensional figures, including number of sides, angle types (right, acute, obtuse), parallel sides, and perpendicular sides. These properties form the basis for classifying and hierarchically organizing shapes.

Two-dimensional figures are described by sides and angles.

Parallel sides never meet, and perpendicular sides make a right angle.

Read it: Every parallelogram is a trapezoid

5 figures. A trapezoid has at least 1 pair of parallel sides. How many are here?

  1. A trapezoid has at least 1 pair of parallel sides.
  2. Find every figure with a pair of arrow marks.
  3. 4 figures have one, so 4 trapezoids.

The names nest: every square is a rectangle, and every rectangle is a parallelogram.

A parallelogram has 2 pairs of parallel sides, so it is a trapezoid too.

A figure with no parallel sides is a quadrilateral, but it is not a trapezoid.

A figure keeps every name its marks earn. The most exact name says the most.

Saying 1 trapezoid, because only 1 figure looks like a trapezoid.

At least 1 pair of parallel sides is enough. The parallelograms have 2 pairs.

A rectangle, a square and a right triangle. How many right angles do they have in all? — 9. 4 in the rectangle, 4 in the square and 1 in the right triangle: 9 right angles.

Find the properties of a rectangle

Let's look at this shape and find out what makes it special.

First, let's count the sides. One, two, three, four.

This figure with four straight sides is called a quadrilateral.

Grade 5 · Sides, angles, parallel & perpendicular

Now let's check the corners — the angles.

Every corner is a square corner. That's a right angle, exactly ninety degrees.

The top and bottom sides go the same way and never meet. They are parallel.

The left and right sides are parallel too. That's two pairs of parallel sides.

When two sides meet at a right angle, we say they are perpendicular.

This shape is a rectangle: four sides, four right angles, two pairs of parallel sides, and perpendicular sides.

Now you try. Name this figure from the list. Which name fits this figure?
