Plus 1 means the next number.

The next number is one more.

Read it: Adding by counting on

You have 3 crackers. Your brother gives you 2 more. You could count them all again from 1 — but you already know the plate is 3.

  1. Say the number you already know: 3.
  2. Count on, 1 number for each new cracker: 4, 5.
  3. The last number you say is the total: 3 + 2 = 5.

Counting all from 1 works, but it is slow, and it gets slower as the numbers grow.

Counting on starts from a number you already trust, so there is less to count and less to lose track of.

Start from the bigger number. 2 + 3 is quicker as 3, 4, 5 than as 2, 3, 4, 5.

To add, start at the bigger number and count on the other one.

Saying the starting number as the first count: 3, 4 for 3 + 2, and answering 4.

The starting number is what you already have. The counting begins with the first NEW cracker: 4.

1 + 1 = ___ — 2. 1 plus 1 is 2.
