How it is taught

0:00 of 1:37

Adding 0 changes nothing.

The other addend stays.

Read it: Adding or taking away 0

4 counters. 0 more come in. There are still 4: 4 + 0 = 4.

  1. Count the counters: 4.
  2. 0 more come in, or 0 go away.
  3. Nothing changed: still 4.

0 means none.

Adding none changes nothing, so the number stays.

Taking none away leaves the number the same too.

Add 0 or take away 0: the number stays the same.

Saying 5, as if 1 more came in.

0 came in. Nothing changed: still 4.

2 + 0 = ___ — 2. Adding 0 changes nothing: still 2.

3 + 0 = 3

Here's a fun secret about the number zero. Watch what happens when we add it!

Let's start at the number three on our number line.

Now we add zero. How many jumps is that?

Zero jumps! We don't move at all. We stay right on three.

Let's write it down. We start with three.

Plus zero — that means we add nothing.

So three plus zero equals... three!

Adding zero never changes the number. Zero is the 'stay the same' helper.
