What is the double of 8?

How it is taught

0:00 of 2:31

A double is two equal groups.

The sum of a double is even.

Read it: A double is 2 equal rows

4 + 4: the top row is 4 and the bottom row is 4. 2 rows of 4 make 8.

  1. Count the top row: 4.
  2. The bottom row is the same: 4.
  3. Say the double: 4 + 4 = 8.

A double adds a number to itself, so both rows are the same.

Once you know double 4 is 8, you do not need to count.

Doubles help with other facts too: 4 + 5 is double 4 and 1 more.

A double is the same number twice.

Counting only 1 row and saying 4.

There are 2 rows of 4. 4 + 4 = 8.

8 + 8 = ___ — 16. 2 rows of 8: double 8 is 16.

7 + 7

A double is when we add a number to itself. Let's figure out seven plus seven.

Here's a number line from zero all the way to twenty.

First we jump seven. We land on seven.

Now jump seven more. We land on fourteen.

We can write that as seven plus seven.

Equals fourteen!
