A double is a number plus itself.

Both addends are the same.

Read it: A double is 2 equal rows

4 + 4: the top row is 4 and the bottom row is 4. 2 rows of 4 make 8.

  1. Count the top row: 4.
  2. The bottom row is the same: 4.
  3. Say the double: 4 + 4 = 8.

A double adds a number to itself, so both rows are the same.

Once you know double 4 is 8, you do not need to count.

Doubles help with other facts too: 4 + 5 is double 4 and 1 more.

A double is the same number twice.

Counting only 1 row and saying 4.

There are 2 rows of 4. 4 + 4 = 8.

1 + 1 = ___ — 2. 2 rows of 1: double 1 is 2.

4 + 4 = 8

A double is when we add a number to itself. Let's try four plus four!

Here are four stars on this side.

And four more stars on this side — the same amount.

Count them all: one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight!

So four plus four equals eight.

Grade 1 · Adding a number to itself

Here are all the doubles from one plus one up to five plus five.

See four plus four right there — eight, just like we counted.

Notice the answers: two, four, six, eight, ten — every double is an even number!

Practice these five doubles until you just know them. Fast doubles make adding easy!
