Divide by 6 means how many sixes fit.

Check by multiplying the answer by 6.

Read it: Divide: count the equal groups

12 apples in groups of 3. Count the groups: 4. So 12 ÷ 3 = 4.

  1. Make groups of the number you divide by.
  2. Count the groups.
  3. Check it both ways: 4 × 3 = 12, so 12 ÷ 3 = 4.

Every group holds the same, so you count groups, not apples.

Division undoes multiplication: 4 groups of 3 make 12.

If you know 4 × 3 = 12, you know 12 ÷ 3 = 4.

To divide by 3, count how many groups of 3 make the total.

Counting all 12 apples and saying 12.

12 is the total. Count the groups of 3: there are 4.

30 ÷ 6 = ___ — 5. 5 groups of 6 make 30: 30 ÷ 6 = 5, because 5 × 6 = 30.

24 ÷ 6

What is twenty-four divided by six?

Dividing means splitting a total into equal groups.

Let's split twenty-four into six equal groups and see how big each group is.

Four, four, four, four, four, four — six groups of four make twenty-four.

Here's a shortcut: division and multiplication are best friends. Do you know six times four?

Six times four equals twenty-four, so we can flip that fact around to divide.
