How it is taught

0:00 of 3:36

Dividing by four asks how many fours fit.

The related times fact is the check.

Read it: Divide: count the equal groups

12 apples in groups of 3. Count the groups: 4. So 12 ÷ 3 = 4.

  1. Make groups of the number you divide by.
  2. Count the groups.
  3. Check it both ways: 4 × 3 = 12, so 12 ÷ 3 = 4.

Every group holds the same, so you count groups, not apples.

Division undoes multiplication: 4 groups of 3 make 12.

If you know 4 × 3 = 12, you know 12 ÷ 3 = 4.

To divide by 3, count how many groups of 3 make the total.

Counting all 12 apples and saying 12.

12 is the total. Count the groups of 3: there are 4.

8 ÷ 4 = ___ — 2. 2 groups of 4 make 8: 8 ÷ 4 = 2, because 2 × 4 = 8.

24 ÷ 4

You have 24 stickers to share equally among 4 friends. How many does each friend get?

Dividing by 4 means splitting a group into 4 equal parts.

Let's split the 24 stickers into 4 equal groups — one for each friend.

Your multiplication facts can help. Think: 4 times what number equals 24?

Let's check the 4s facts: 4 times 4 is 16, 4 times 5 is 20... 4 times 6 is 24!
