Decompose numbers up to 10 in multiple ways

Students will break apart numbers up to 10 into two smaller parts in more than one way, recording each decomposition with a drawing, objects, or equation (e.g., 7 = 3 + 4 and 7 = 5 + 2). This builds flexibility with number relationships.

A number can be split in many ways.

The two parts add to the whole.

Read it: 10 comes apart

8 counters sit in the frame. 2 cells sit empty. A full frame is 10, so those empty cells are the rest of the 10.

  1. Look at the 8 counters already in the frame.
  2. See the 2 empty cells without counting them one by one.
  3. 8 counters and 2 empty cells make 10.

Counting empty cells one by one works, but it is slow, and a skipped cell gives the wrong number.

A full frame is always 10 cells, so whatever is not filled is exactly what is still missing.

10 breaking into 8 and 2 is the same fact as 8 + 2 = 10, seen instead of recited.

10 comes apart into what is filled and what is empty; the empty cells are the rest.

Counting the 8 counters that are already there, and saying you need 8 more.

The counters you have are not the ones you still need. Look at the empty cells: 2.

5 + ___ = 10 — 5. A full frame is 10. 5 counters are in it, so 5 cells are empty.

Breaking apart 7

Today we'll take a number and break it into two smaller parts. Let's try the number seven!

Here are seven dots. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven.

We can break seven into two groups. Here's one way.

Three dots in this group, and four dots in this group.

So three plus four makes seven. We can write: seven equals three plus four.

But wait — there's more than one way to break seven apart. Watch this!

Five dots in this group, and two dots in this group.

Five plus two also makes seven. Seven equals five plus two.

Seven can be three and four, or five and two. Numbers can be broken apart in lots of ways!
