24, ___, 26, 27, 28

How it is taught

0:00 of 1:44

The ones digits repeat every ten.

After 26 comes 27.

Read it: Count by ones on the line

After 37 comes 38: 1 tick on. After 59 comes 60: the ones run out, and a new ten starts.

  1. Find the number you are on: 37.
  2. Move 1 tick on.
  3. Say the next number: 38.

Each tick on the line is 1 more.

After a number that ends in 9, the ones start again at 0 and the tens go up: 59, then 60.

The same rule works all the way to 100: after 99 comes 100.

Counting by ones is 1 tick on. After a 9, a new ten starts.

Saying 50 after 59, as if the tens went back.

The tens go up: 59, then 60.

After 19 comes ___? — 20. 19 ends in 9, so a new ten starts: 20.

Counting from 37 to 50

Let's count forward from thirty-seven all the way up to fifty.

Here is our number line. We start right here at thirty-seven.

Take one step forward — thirty-eight.

One more step — thirty-nine.

After thirty-nine comes forty! We jump into a brand new tens family — the forties.

Now we keep going in the forties: forty-one, forty-two, forty-three, forty-four.

Forty-five, forty-six, forty-seven, forty-eight, forty-nine.

And one more step lands us on fifty!
