Area is the flat space inside a shape.

Equal parts of a whole have equal area.

A rectangle is cut into 4 equal parts. One part is shaded. It is 1/4 of the whole.

  1. Check that the parts are all the same size.
  2. Count the equal parts: 4.
  3. Name one part: 1 of 4 equal parts is 1/4.

Equal parts cover the same amount of the shape.

The bottom number tells how many equal parts make the whole.

4 parts of 1/4 make the whole rectangle.

When a whole is cut into 4 equal parts, each part is 1/4 of the whole.

Calling a part 1/4 when the 4 parts are not the same size.

Only equal parts are fourths. Check the sizes first.

A rectangle of 10 squares is cut into 2 equal parts. How many squares are in one part? — 5. 10 squares in 2 equal parts: 5 in each, and each part is 1/2 of the whole.

24 sq units ÷ 4 equal parts

Here's a rectangle. Its total area is twenty-four square units.

Grade 3 · Sharing area equally between parts

Let's split it into four equal parts with straight lines.

If the whole rectangle is twenty-four square units, what's the area of just one part?

We share the area equally: twenty-four divided by four.

Each equal part has an area of six square units.

Let's label every part with its area: six, six, six, six.

Now let's check. If we add the four parts back together, do we get the whole?

Six plus six plus six plus six equals twenty-four.

Yes! The four equal parts add up to the whole. Partitioning shares area equally.
